nyc's steak tartare diaries

the c cafe and wine

rating: 7/10

the c cafe is a cozy, warm, neo-victorian cafe in the west village serving all day steak and tuna tartare—just what i like to hear! featuring pastries, seasonal beverages, and elevated classical small plates, the c cafe is an idyllic location for a late-night hang with friends.

the steak tartare here is simple and classical: packed with shallots and roasted garlic and served alongside a spicy dijon mustard and cornichons. featuring a simple side of toasted bread, this tartare is ideal for purists and traditionalists. i found it to be perfectly palatable and enjoyable, and a great introductory tartare for my dinner companions who had not yet experienced one. the c cafe’s tartare goes down smoothly with or without bread, and is light and easy delight in. additionally, the side of mustard and cornichons allows restaurant patrons to customize the spice and sour levels of the dish to their own liking. thus, the lower rating here is not because the tartare is anything less than great, but merely because it does not particularly stand out among the many other perfectly lovely tartares out there. this being said, this dish is the perfect place to start for people curious to give steak tartare a try.
